Description: The Curtin University Ecotoxicology group offers recent PhD graduates or experienced researchers an opportunity to join the team to conduct research in the field of aquatic ecotoxicology. The Curtin Ecotoxicology team has extensive expertise researching the impacts of oil and gas activities on the marine environment, which includes the development of environmentally acceptable drilling muds, the impacts of produced formation water discharge on marine fish, and the impacts and recovery of commercially important fish following oil spills. A parallel research program investigates the impacts of urban contamination on fish health using biochemical and molecular markers. The research translates into improved management practices to prevent or limit contamination of the environment, and inform on the efficiency of remediation.

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow with experience in biochemical markers of aquatic biota’s health or other molecular techniques relevant to the assessment of contaminant impacts on biota.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will join a small but recognised team of scientists working in the Curtin Aquatic Research Laboratories, a modern world-class facility for conducting research using aquatic organisms. The overall research theme is the assessment of the health of aquatic environments and impacts from contaminants on aquatic biota, especially focussed on pollution by oil and gas and other industrial activities, and/or urban contamination.

Specifically you will -

• With the collaboration of a senior research scientist, carry out innovative and high-impact research
• Have responsibility to propose, design and execute research projects
• Assist in the supervision and direction of research students
• Undertake regular reviews of relevant literature
• Produce high quality scientific papers suitable for publication in quality journals
• Assist in writing research proposals
• Potentially deliver guest lectures to undergraduate classes

To be considered you will hold a PhD (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as aquatic ecotoxicology, environmental chemistry or related disciplines. Experience working with aquatic organisms in a laboratory setting is strongly preferred.

You will also have -
• Demonstrated research experience in developing and performing experiments to answer scientific questions in
environmental systems
• Demonstrated skills in various biochemical and molecular techniques such as ELISA, RT-qPCR, etc
• Demonstrated experience in the determination of a suite of biomarker of health for aquatic biota
• Highly developed written and oral communication skills and experience in taking research outcomes to
publication
• The motivation and discipline to carry out independent research.
